CONSTRUCTION OF NEW TANZANIA-ZAMBIA FUEL PIPELINE TO COMMENCE BY OCTOBER 2027

‎Government says construction of the new Tanzania-Zambia fuel pipeline is expected to commence by October 2027, with the 710-kilometre project estimated to take between 18 and 24 months to complete.

Ministry of Energy Permanent Secretary for Energy, Professor Ephraim Munshifwa says government is currently undertaking preparatory works, including feasibility studies and securing the necessary approvals, with teams already on the ground.

Professor Munshifwa says the project is aimed at boosting fuel supply capacity and reducing over-reliance on road transportation, as the existing pipeline currently only meets about 67 percent of the country’s diesel needs, with the remainder supplied by road.

He told Phoenix News that the expansion has become critical in view of rising demand from the mining sector and the wider economy, with government planning ahead for increased fuel requirements driven by economic growth.

Professor Munshifwa has disclosed that the estimated 2.2-billion-dollar project will be implemented under a Public-Private Partnership model, where private developers will finance construction and recover their investment through a concession arrangement before the infrastructure is eventually handed over to government as a state asset.

The project will involve construction of a new pipeline to transport diesel, while the existing pipeline will be refurbished to carry both diesel and petrol.
