An 11-year-old boy from Sinwaba village in Mazabuka’s Mwanachingwala chiefdom had his right hand amputated following injuries sustained after a hand grenade he had picked up exploded.

On 14th September, 2026, the victim and his mother travelled to Tandabale Market in Magoye Township to buy groceries.

While returning home, the victim, who was walking behind his mother, picked up a hand grenade and allegedly pulled the pin, causing it to explode in his hands.

As a result of the explosion, the victim sustained multiple cuts to his right hand, a cut below his left eye and cuts to the abdomen.

The victim was immediately rushed by his mother to Mazabuka General Hospital for medical attention where his right hand had been amputated and he was reported to be in a stable condition.

Southern Province Commissioner of Police, Moono Namalongo, says officers who visited the scene of the incident recovered fragments of the grenade.
