The Unika I and II Wind Energy Facility being developed by Mphepo Power Limited, will be located in Chief M’bangombe’s Chiefdom and comprise 42 wind turbines, an on-site substation and associated 330-kilovolt overhead transmission infrastructure.
ZEMA Manager Corporate Affairs, Ruth Kamwi says, the approval was made by the Environmental Assessment Committee of the sixth ZEMA Board during its ordinary sitting on September 24, 2026.
Ms Kamwi said the facility once operational, will generate clean and renewable energy while contributing to the diversification of Zambia’s energy mix away from hydropower.
She added that the Chewa people under Paramount Chief Kalonga Gawa Undi, own a 10 percent stake in Mphepo Power Limited through the Chewa Development Trust.
In a statement issued to ZANIS today, Ms Kamwi said the project demonstrates how environmental stewardship and traditional leadership can contribute to advancing Zambia’s green economy.
She said the Committee considered 113 projects across six sectors, of which 100 were approved, five deferred and eight rejected.
Ms Kamwi said ZEMA will continue monitoring compliance by developers to ensure all approved projects adhere to conditions contained in their decision letters in line with the Environmental Management Act.
