Zambia : Schools Ready For New Term-Mando

Ministry of Education, says schools countrywide are ready to reopen for a new academic term on Monday, September 7, 2026.

Ministry of Education Assistant Director and Head of Communications Kunda Mando says all the 13,991 schools in the country’s 116 districts are ready to receive learners.

Ms Mando told journalists in Lusaka today that preparations for the reopening have been complete, preceding the opening of schools.

She said teachers have also been oriented on the implementation of the new curriculum, which is currently being phased in at Grade One, Grade Two, Grade Four, Form One and Form Two levels.

The Assistant Director explained that Head Teachers have also assessed the preparedness of teachers, including the progress made on schemes of work and class registration in preparation for the new school term.

She has since urged parents and guardians to ensure that learners report to school tomorrow, saying the government wants all children to resume learning without delay.

And Ms Mando has revealed that schools have been provided with grants to meet operational needs, including cleanliness and other services.

Ms Mando has further disclosed that her ministry disbursed K794 million for the third quarter, to facilitate the effective running of schools.

She said the funds are subject to monitoring by Standards Officers and other mechanisms to ensure that they are used for their intended purpose.

Meanwhile, Ms Mando has announced that September is literacy month, with the national commemoration to be held in Kalumbila district, in North-western Province.

She said the latest demographic and health survey indicates that 81 percent of males aged between 15 and 49 can read and write, compared to 70 percent of females.

Ms Mando said the figures demonstrate the need to continue investing in literacy for both boys and girls, particularly among women and girls who remain behind.

Ms Mando said this is in line with the competency-based curriculum, which seeks to equip learners with practical skills and the ability to apply knowledge in solving real-life challenges.

She said the activities include adult literacy programmes, aimed at encouraging people of all ages to acquire reading and writing skills.

The literacy month is themed, “literacy for people, the planet, and prosperity.”
