Government has called for increased youth participation in karate and other sporting disciplines, saying sport remains a critical tool for youth empowerment, discipline and national development.

Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts Permanent Secretary Kangwa Chileshe says martial arts such as karate can help shield young people from crime and other destructive behaviours by instilling resilience, self-discipline and respect.

He made the remarks during the closing ceremony of 15th Japanese Ambassador’s Karate Cup jointly hosted by the Embassy of Japan and Kyokushin Karate International.

He says karate has grown significantly in Zambia since its introduction in the 1970s, with about 8,000 Zambians now participating in various styles, including Kyokushin and Shotokan.

Mr Chileshe has also commended the Embassy of Japan for its continued support towards the development of karate in Zambia, noting that the Japanese Ambassador’s Karate Cup has grown into one of the biggest martial arts tournaments in the SADC region.

He says the tournament has also provided opportunities for young karatekas to pursue careers in the defense and security sector, with some joining the Zambia Army, Zambia Air Force, Zambia National Service and Zambia Police Service.

Speaking at the same event, Japanese Ambassador to Zambia, Mikami Akiteru said karate has evolved beyond sport to become a powerful bridge strengthening cultural ties between Zambia and Japan.

Ambassador Mikami said Zambia’s growing karate community demonstrates that cultural exchange between the two countries is no longer one-way, with Zambian instructors now teaching the Japanese martial art to Japanese children living in Zambia.

Meanwhile, Kyokushin Kenbukaikan International, Executive Director, Simba Mangaba has honoured President Hakainde Hichilema with a masters-degree black belt and a full karate uniform in recognition of his perseverance, discipline and commitment throughout his life.

Kyokushin Kenbukaikan International Executive Director, Simba Mangaba, says the honour is not merely about a belt or uniform, but represents discipline, courage, endurance and the determination to rise after every setback
