Zambia : Annual Kalumbila Sports Event Bags Over 3 Million

The annual Kalumbila Sports event organised by First Quantum Minerals (FQM) Trident Limited has raised over K3 million from last year’s event with the funds going towards the construction of a theatre at Wumi Mini Hospital.

Speaking during the 2026 Kalumbila challenge, FQM Trident Limited Assistant General Manager Frederic Wouters says the event was another way in which the company was contributing to the development and wellbeing of the community.

Mr Wouters said this year’s proceeds from the challenge will go towards community livelihood initiatives and continued improvement of social infrastructure in Kalumbila.

“For us as First Quantum Minerals, the Kalumbila challenge has become much more than a sporting event. It is about health, wellness, inclusion and bringing people together,” he said.

He said the challenge was also demonstrating what could be achieved when a community came together with a shared purpose.

“This year, 2,200 people have taken up the challenge, up from the 1,500 people who took part last year, with close to 4,000 people expected here today,” Mr Wouters said.

He said the growth in participation was encouraging because behind every number was someone choosing to get active, challenge themselves and be part of the experience.

Mr Wouters said the K3 million raised last year has been channelled towards the construction of a theatre at Wumi Mini Hospital.

“That theatre is now under construction, giving us a tangible example of how an event like this can translate community participation into lasting social impact,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mr Wouters said the challenge has also helped create business linkages and investment opportunities within the community.

He said the growing interest in the event has further helped inspire other projects and strengthened goodwill around development partnerships across Kalumbila.

“As the town grows, our ambition should be about more than economic development. It should also be about creating a vibrant community where people want to live, work and raise their families,” he said.

And speaking at the same occasion, Kalumbila District Commissioner Brenda Sankisa who was represented by District Administrative Officer (DAO) Frank Siatwinda said government appreciates the role the private sector continues to play in promoting sporting activities.

Ms Sankisa said the government recognised that a healthy population is an important part of a strong and productive community, adding that events such as the Kalumbila challenge encourage people to remain active, make healthy choices and take greater responsibility for their wellbeing.

“What is particularly encouraging today is the variety of activities on the programme. From cycling and running to football, chess and aerobics, there is an opportunity for people of different ages, interests and abilities to participate,” she said.

Ms Sankisa said this was why partnerships between government, the private sector, community organisations and residents were important.

“As Kalumbila continues to grow, we must also think about the kind of community we want to build. Development is not only about infrastructure, businesses and economic activity. It is also about ensuring that the people who live here have opportunities to lead healthy, active and fulfilling lives,” she said.
