Zambia : Public Cautioned Against Harming Vultures

Game Rangers International Community Outreach Ranger, under the Rufunsa Conservation Project Chrispine Tembo, is appealing to community members in Luangwa District not endanger the lives of vultures when they come across them.

Mr Tembo says vultures are social animals that play a critical role in the ecosystem by cleaning up carcasses of dead animals and any other meat substances that may be rotting in the environment.

Speaking during a World Vultures Day local language programme at Adroit Radio in Luangwa District, Mr Tembo explained that the commemoration that takes place on September 5th annually, is meant to educate children between 4 and 12 years old on what the vultures are and their characteristics.

“The purpose of targeting the children is to inculcate a sense of responsibility towards these vultures as they grow into adulthood,” he said.

Mr Tembo explained that vultures are not hunters but depend on dead and rotten meat substances that either die on their own or are killed by other animals.

He said the vultures have a high sense of smell and sight of over two kilometers, giving a sense to always fly high above thermal winds which is necessary to move long distances.

“These animals are scavengers but they do not allow themselves to be stained with blood, while eating, making them a unique species,” he explained.

He further said that the vultures are in 23 species, stating that they are not dangerous as can be seen on their blunt claws.

He however warned that their beaks are more dangerous because they are sharper than a sharp knife.

Mr Tembo appealed to members of the public to desist from endangering the species for whatever reason they may have, including myths.
