Team Zambia concluded its participation at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games on 1 August 2026 with two bronze medals, both from boxing, as athletics and lawn bowls provided the nation’s final appearances.

‎Defending men’s 400m champion Muzala Samukonga failed to retain his Birmingham 2022 title after clocking 45.61 seconds in a highly competitive final.

‎Following the race, Samukonga thanked the nation on social media.
‎“Thank you for your love and support, Mother Zambia 🇿🇲. Unfortunately, we didn’t bring it back home,” he wrote.

‎The Commonwealth Games Association of Zambia commended Samukonga for his dedication, saying his commitment, humility and determination continue to inspire young athletes. “Zambia remains proud of its champion,” CGAZ stated.

‎In lawn bowls, Mildred Mkandawire ended Zambia’s campaign with a straight-sets defeat to Malaysia’s Emma Firyana Saroji, losing 9-3, 18-2. Mkandawire finished the women’s singles round-robin with one win and four losses. Her only victory came against Caroline Whitehead of the Isle of Man, 9-6, 9-3. She also lost to Wales’ Amy Williams and India’s Nayanmoni Saikia.

‎Team Zambia’s 4x400m mixed relay team of Emeldah Kapunjila, Niddy Mingilishi, Kennedy Luchembe and Patrick Nyambe also did not finish after Luchembe sustained a muscle pull during his leg.

‎Earlier in the Games, Zambia secured its first two medals through boxing. Catherine Mwape made history as the first Zambian female boxer to win a Commonwealth Games medal, claiming bronze in the Women’s 54kg after losing to India’s Preeti Preeti in the semi-final.

‎Emmanuel Katema added a second bronze in the men’s 65kg category after a hard-fought semi-final loss to England’s Patris Mughalzai.

‎The National Olympic Committee of Zambia praised both boxers for their courage and resilience. “Congratulations to Catherine Mwape and Emmanuel Katema for flying the Zambian flag high,” NOCZ said.

‎By Friday lunchtime, Zambia was ranked 26th on the overall medals table. Australia led with 51 gold, 24 silver and 35 bronze, while Nigeria was the best-performing African nation with 8 gold, 5 silver and 3 bronze.
