Process on Housing and Poverty in Zambia (PPHPZ) in partnership with GIZ have launched the Bauleni Solid Waste Management, which will result in the formulation of the Bauleni Integrated Solid Waste Management Plan.

And the Lusaka City Council has called on residents of Bauleni to take collective responsibility for waste management and actively participate in the development of an integrated solid waste management plan for the community.

Lusaka City Council Town Clerk Oliver Muuka says effective waste management requires the involvement of households, businesses, institutions, waste collectors, community leaders and residents.

Mr Muuka said this in a speech read on his behalf by Director of Public Health Victor Kagoli, during the launch at Prince Takamado Primary School grounds in Lusaka today.

People’s Process on Housing and Poverty in Zambia (PPHPZ) urged Bauleni residents to take ownership of the Integrated Solid Waste Management plan to ensure it addresses the community’s environmental and public health challenges.

PPHPZ Programmes Coordinator Melanie Chirwa said the plan should be a practical framework that reflects the realities, priorities and aspirations of the people of Bauleni.

Ms Chirwa says the plan should not merely be viewed as a document, but as a tool for addressing solid waste management challenges in a practical, inclusive and locally informed manner.

She noted that Bauleni continues to experience a number of solid waste management challenges which have serious implications for the environment and public health.

GIZ CitiZen+D Head of Programmes Patric Schlager disclosed that the compound is generating an estimated 13,000 kilograms of solid waste every day, raising concerns over waste accumulation, blocked drainage systems and associated health risks.

Mr Schlager said the situation requires a coordinated approach involving the community, Lusaka Integrated Solid Waste Management Company and other stakeholders.

Mr Schlager said the concerns have led to the development of a partnership model aimed at formulating an Integrated Solid Waste Management Plan for Bauleni.
