Zambia : Samfya’s US$1 Million Aquaculture Park Operational

Government has operationalised the US$1 Million Samfya Aquaculture Park, a major investment designed to transform fish farming in Luapula Province and expand opportunities for communities living around Lake Bangweulu.

Ministry of Information and Media Director Spokesperson, Henry Kapata, said during his recent visit to the province that President Hakainde Hichilema indicated that the waters of Lake Bangweulu must benefit the people who live around them, adding that the facility is part of that vision.

Mr Kapata says the Aquaculture Park is expected to produce one million fish fingerlings every year, train fish farmers, fabricate fish cages locally and support the expansion of commercial aquaculture across Samfya, Chifunabuli and neighbouring districts.

He stated that the government has already empowered cooperatives with fish cages on Lake Bangweulu, helping communities move beyond capture fishing towards sustainable fish farming that creates jobs, increases incomes and protects fish stocks for future generations.

Mr Kapata has told the media that the facility forms part of the broader US$50.89 Million Zambia Aquaculture Enterprise Development Project, supported by the African Development Bank and the Zambian government, aimed at unlocking Luapula’s fisheries and aquaculture potential.

He further said from producing fingerlings to supporting fish farmers and strengthening the entire fisheries value chain, the investment positions Samfya as one of Zambia’s emerging aquaculture hubs.
