The Radiation Protection Authority (RPA) has completed a comprehensive inspection of the newly re-established radiotherapy facility at UTH Cancer Diseases Hospital.

Speaking during the inspection, RPA Senior Inspector Ian Mukabe, said the inspection of Linear Accelerator and CT scan equipment facility was conducted in accordance with Zambia’s Radiation Safety Legislation.

Mr Mukabe said the assessment was undertaken to verify that the facility complies with both national and international Radiation Protection Standards before commencing operations.

“I can confirm that the scheduled radiation protection inspection has been completed in line with the Ionizing Radiation Protection Act No. 16 of 2005 and its Amendment Act No. 19 of 2011,” he said

“The purpose of this inspection was to verify the Cancer Diseases Hospital’s compliance with national radiation safety standards as well as international standards.”

Mr Mukabe explained that the verification covered the design and layout of the facility, performance verification of the radiotherapy equipment and a review of all the necessary documentation related to radiation safety.

He added that the Authority is mandated to ensure that safety measures are in place to protect workers, patients, the public and the environment from any harmful effects that may arise from equipment or materials capable of producing ionizing radiation.

And UTH Cancer Diseases Hospital, Senior Medical Physicist, Mulape Kanduza, said the successful completion of the inspection will pave the way for the Hospital to begin offering radiotherapy services and expanding access to cancer treatment.

She said the hospital will continue working with the Radiation Authority to ensure the highest standards of radiation safety for patients, staff and the public.
