Police in Chipata have arrested a 15-year-old boy for allegedly defiling a child under the age of 16.

Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer, Robertson Mweemba, says the matter was reported by the victim’s mother that her three-year-old daughter was allegedly defiled by a juvenile from the same community in Chipata District.

Mr Mweemba said the incident was reported on Monday, September 28, 2026 at 15:40 hours at a Police post under Chipata Central Police Station.

“Police received a report of defilement of a child under 16. The incident allegedly occurred on September 28 around 11:00 hours in Chipata District. The complainant reported that her 3-year-old child complained of pain,” he explained.

Mr Mweemba said a medical report form was issued for the child survivor to undergo medical examination and treatment at a health facility.

He said Police have since apprehended the 15-year-old juvenile suspect who is in Police custody to assist with investigations.

“The suspect is a juvenile and is being handled in line with the Children’s Code Act. Investigations have been opened and the docket will be submitted to the National Prosecution Authority,” Mr Mweemba said.

He said both the victim and the juvenile suspect are children and are being handled under the child protection and child justice provisions of the Children’s Code Act No.12 of 2022.

And during a two-day workshop in Petauke organized by Save the Children, members of the public are cautioned against sharing the identity, name, face, village or family details of the child survivor or the juvenile suspect on social media or community platforms.

Save the Children Child Protection Programmes Coordinator, Elijah Nsonge said survivors have their privacy and psycho-social support and child protection services which needs to be well taken care off.

Meanwhile, Zambia Institute of Independent Media Alliance Programmes Manager, Oscar Kapata re-echoed the need to be digitally security conscious especially on issues that surrounding children.
