The Chinese Government has donated various agriculture equipment to the Zambia Air Force(ZAF) to help the

defence wing scale up its efforts in contributing to the Grow Zambia Agenda.

The donated agriculture equipment include tractors, planters, ploughs and industrial sprayers.

Chinese Ambassador to Zambia, Han Jing, says the donation is a gesture of good will between Zambia and China.

Speaking during the handover ceremony at the Zambia Air Force Headquarters in Lusaka today, Mr Han said the two countries have enjoyed cordial relations since diplomatic ties commenced in 1964.

“Over the past 62 years, China-Zambia relations have spanned many areas such as transport, agriculture, construction, transport, trade and defence. Our militaries are very close and so far, China has sent 29 teams of military experts to Zambia,” Mr Han said.

The Chinese envoy said agriculture is an important aspect of Zambia’s economy and President Hakainde Hichilema believes that food security is national security.

Mr Han said China is donating the tractors and other equipment to the Zambia Air Force because it believes that agriculture mechanisation is key to economic growth.

“China is ready to partner with Zambia to support mechanisation in agriculture to achieve the aspirations of the Zambian government,” he added.

And Ministry of Defence Permanent Secretary, Maambo Haamaundu described the Chinese donation as generous and timely.

Mr Haamaundu said the donation is an investment in productivity, food Security, technology and into the Zambian people.

He said China was investing in Zambia’s food security by providing the tractors, planters and sprayers.

“The Grow Zambia Agenda which President Hakainde Hichilema recently unveiled will help us position ourselves to meet the targets set by the Commander-In-Chief and for the military, the Commander-In-Chief has given us two million metric tonnes of maize as a target and we cannot fail to meet it with this equipment China has given us,” said Mr Haamaundu.

He said the donated equipment will help ZAF prepare land, plant and manage crops in its various farms.

Meanwhile, Zambia Air Force Commander, Oscar Nyoni said the agriculture equipment will give ZAF greater capacity to carry out its agriculture programmes.

Lt. Gen. Nyoni said the Zambia Air Force has responded to President Hichilema’s call to increase the Defence Force’s contribution to food production in the country.

“This farming equipment will help us undertake farming activities more effectively. We want our farms to support our personnel with food,” he said.

Lt. Gen. Nyoni said the defence wing wants to contribute to the Grow Zambia Agenda by scaling up its production of food across the country.

He appreciated the gesture by the Chinese Government saying it will go a long way in achieving targets set out in the Grow Zambia Agenda.

Lt. Gen. Nyoni revealed that Air Force mealie meal, Air Force bread, Air Force eggs and other ZAF products had been rolled out on the open market as part of the force’s contribution to national food security.
