One person has died, while three others have sustained injuries in a road traffic accident (RTA)  involving a public service bus in Rufunsa district, Lusaka Province.

The accident occurred today in Lukwipa area along Great East Road around 12:20 hours.

Zambia Police Service Public Relations Officer Godfrey Chilabi, confirmed the accident to the media in a statement issued in Lusaka.

Mr Chilabi identified the deceased as Shadrick Mukuka aged 27, of an unknown address.

He said Mr Mukuka sustained serious injuries and later died while receiving treatment at Mpanshya Mission Hospital.

He said the body of the deceased has been deposited in the hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem examination.

He explained that the accident involved a Yaxing public service bus, registration number AIF 9348 ZM that was driven by Francis Chisanga, aged 35 of Chainda Compound in Lusaka.

The bus which was travelling from Lusaka to Chipata in Eastern Province had 54 passengers on board.

Mr Chilabi stated that 26 of the passengers were pupils from Mbwindi Secondary School in Sinda district, while the other 28 were travelling to Chipata.

He revealed that preliminary investigations indicate that the accident occurred when the driver attempted to overtake an unidentified motor vehicle which allegedly swerved into his lane.

Mr Chilabi said the driver lost control of the bus while trying to avoid a collision causing it to veer off the road and hit several trees.

He said the driver sustained serious injuries and was admitted to Mpanshya Mission Hospital, where he is receiving treatment.

Mr Chilabi added that two other passengers sustained minor injuries and are also receiving treatment at the same hospital while 51 passengers escaped unhurt.

He said the bus was extensively damaged at the front, adding that investigations into the accident are continuing.

The Police Spokesperson has since advised motorists to exercise caution, avoid excessive speed and overtake only when it is safe to do so.

Mr Chilabi further urged motorists in the country to remain alert and observe all road traffic regulations to prevent loss of life and injuries.
