The Government of Namibia says it is deeply saddened by the passing of first Indigenous Zambia Airforce Commander, Peter Zuze (Retired).

In a statement Issued to the media in Lusaka by Namibia’s Ministry of International Relations and Trade, Lt Gen Zuze has been described as a distinguished military leader, diplomat, and a steadfast friend of Namibia.

The Namibian government stated that Lt. Gen. Zuze, who died in Lusaka on September 14, 2026 after an illness, had left behind a legacy of leadership and solidarity that extended beyond Zambia’s borders.

According to the Namibian Ministry, he is remembered as the first indigenous Commander of the Zambia Air Force and later as Zambia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations between 1986 and 1991.

The Namibian Government noted that during the period, Lt. Gen. ZUZE also served as President of the United Nations Council for Namibia from 1988 to 1991, a role the ministry said was pivotal in advancing Namibia’s independence.

The Ministry stated that Lt. Gen. Zuze had presided over the Council’s special meeting in Windhoek in April 1990, where he transmitted the declaration affirming Namibia’s determination to achieve independence.

The Ministry noted that these actions symbolised Zambia’s unwavering support for Namibia’s liberation.

The Namibian Government emphasised that Lt. Gen Zuze’s passing represented not only the loss of a distinguished son of Zambia but also of a brother in the struggle and a friend in peace.

The ministry added that the nation remained eternally grateful to late Lt. Gen Zuze, for his contributions to justice, democracy, and international cooperation.
