Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary, Kennedy Lishimpi, has noted that Childhood Cancer remains an important public health concern not only in Zambia but on the globe.

Dr Lishimpi revealed that approximately 400,000 children and adolescents aged between zero and 19 years develop Cancer every year globally, with the majority of cases occurring in low- and middle-income countries where survival rates remain low.

Dr Lishimpi was speaking in a speech read for him by Cancer Diseases Hospital (CDH) Head of Clinical Care, Paul Kamfwa at a candlelight vigil held in Lusaka last evening to commemorate Childhood Cancer Awareness month at the (CDH) in Lusaka.

He also noted that Zambia continues to face challenges in Childhood Cancer care, including delayed diagnosis, referral processes, access to specialised treatment, availability of medicines, human resources and the ability of families to remain on treatment for the required duration.

He said the Government, working with cooperating partners, has made progress in addressing some of the barriers to Childhood Cancer treatment.

Dr Lishimpi stressed that Zambia remains committed to contributing to the WHO Global Initiative for Childhood Cancer target of achieving at least 60 percent survival among children with cancer by 2030.

He cited Zambia’s participation in the Global Platform for Access to Childhood Cancer medicines, a collaboration involving the World Health Organisation (WHO).

He stressed the need for early diagnosis, saying unusual symptoms in children should not be ignored and assured that early recognition and detection of Cancer can save lives.

Dr Lishimpi further emphasised the need for compassionate, child-centered care, emotional and social support for children and families throughout the treatment journey.

Meanwhile, Lions District 413 Zambia Governor, George Banda said the organisation has continued to support efforts aimed at raising awareness of Childhood Cancer.

Mr Banda said Lions International designated September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month to promote advocacy and support for children affected by the disease.

Mr Banda said the Lions Club of Roma has identified CDH as one of its partners and regularly responds to requests for support from the hospital.

And a cancer survivor, Chawaza Chalwe, said Cancer is a treatable disease when diagnosed early.
