Muchinga Province Deputy Permanent Secretary, Brian Sichande has hailed the World Food Programme (WFP) as a critical partner in Zambia’s development, particularly in advancing the country’s nutritional and agricultural agenda.

Speaking when a WFP delegation paid a courtesy call on him in Chinsali, Mr Sichande emphasized that government, under President Hakainde Hichilema, is deeply committed to eliminating stunted growth by ensuring citizens have access to high-quality, nutritious food.

“We need to ensure that we do away with stunted growth, and we cannot do that without ensuring that we provide nutritious food to our people,” he said.

Mr Sichande said the efforts by WFP support the government’s ambitious targets under the Grow Zambia Agenda, noting that WFP’s focus on farming aligns perfectly with national priorities.

He added that agricultural support directly translates to improved livelihoods.

“When people have incomes, it is easy for them to access good food and clean, safe water. Basically, all we need is good service delivery,” he stated.

And WFP Head of Nutrition Phililo Nambeye, who led the delegation, disclosed that the organization is currently implementing two major projects in Muchinga Province, funded by the European Union (EU) and the German government.

Ms Nambeye said the two projects are designed to help smallholder farmers build resilience against climate-related shocks through integrated land management.

She added that the approach encourages responsible use of natural resources to ensure long-term agricultural productivity.

Ms. Nambeye noted that the current interventions build upon the successes and lessons learned from the previous Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) programme.

She pointed out that the WFP team is in Muchinga Province to conduct oversight visits to Isoka and Mafinga districts to assess implementation progress.

Meanwhile, WFP Officer in-Charge of small holder farmers, Norman Chisamo said WFP is also tackling financial and marketing bottlenecks faced by rural farmers, highlighting that financial inclusion is a cornerstone of the strategy.

Mr Chisamo said the WFP is actively promoting Savings for Change, an initiative rooted in Village Savings and lending associations.

He said Village Banking is a good concept that enables farmers to pool resources together and invest in productive activities, inputs, and other aspects.

Mr Chisamo stated that WFP, in collaboration with the government, is rolling out a three-tiered aggregation model that provides smallholder farmers with structured channels to sell their produce, eliminating the frustration of lacking a market after harvest.

He also acknowledged that Muchinga Province continues to face significant nutritional challenges, adding that in response to this challenge, the WFP is focusing heavily on community level value addition to ensure that local communities are not just producing nutritious food, but actively consuming it to transform local health outcomes.
