Zambia : MoM Urged To Expedite Processing Of Artisanal Licences

Central Province Permanent Secretary, Milner Mwanakampwe has called on the Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development to expedite the processing of artisanal licences to enable young people engage in safe and legal mining activities.

Dr Mwanakampwe says the lengthy process of acquiring artisanal mining licences is contributing to challenges faced by young people in the mining sector.

He was speaking when officials from the Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development paid a courtesy call on him in Kabwe.

Dr Mwanakampwe observed that people are losing their lives in mining pits, making it important for artisanal miners to be adequately trained and supported to conduct their activities safely.

He said the ministry should encourage artisanal miners to open bank accounts so that they can receive payments through formal financial channels and contribute more effectively to the economy.

Dr Mwanakampwe said training of artisanal miners is important as it promotes safe mining practices which can help reduce accidents and loss of lives.

Meanwhile, Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development Assistant Director for Policy and Development Cooperation, Mercy Zulu said her team is in the Central Province for 20-days training artisanal miners on safe and responsible mining practices.

Ms Zulu said 400 artisanal miners will be trained to equip them with the knowledge and skills needed to conduct mining activities safely.

She said the ministry is also facilitating access to finance for artisanal miners so that they can increase their contribution to the country’s economy.
