Tanzania is mourning the death of Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of President Samia Suluhu Hassan and the country’s first First Gentleman.
Hafidh died at around 8:00am on Monday, September 7, 2026, while receiving treatment for a heart condition at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar.
The death was announced in a national address by Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi, who conveyed condolences to President Samia, her family, relatives and the people of Tanzania.
Funeral arrangements are underway in Kizimkazi, Zanzibar, the birthplace of President Samia and an area with strong family ties for the couple.
Hafidh, a retired agricultural officer and academic, married Samia Suluhu in 1978. The couple had four children — three sons and a daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, who is involved in politics in Zanzibar.
He largely remained away from the political spotlight throughout his wife’s rise through public life.
Even after Samia became Tanzania’s first female President in March 2021, Hafidh maintained a notably private profile, rarely seeking public attention.
His position as the President’s husband made him Tanzania’s first First Gentleman, a role he occupied without the public visibility normally associated with spouses of political leaders.
His death has prompted condolences from across the region.
Kenyan President William Ruto described Hafidh as President Samia’s lifelong companion and a beloved father to their children, expressing condolences to the Tanzanian President, her family and the people of Tanzania.
Hafidh’s death comes as Tanzania enters a period of mourning for a man who spent much of his life away from the political spotlight, even as his wife rose to become one of the country’s most prominent political figures.
He was 73, according to regional reports.
