Rural News 2 min.Read Lumwana-Kambimba road works cheers residents By Kevin Kabwe October 2, 2026 FacebookTwitterPinterestWhatsAppThe contractor engaged to work on the 80 kilometre Lumwana-Kambimba border road is on site, with works having advanced following the signing of a concession agreement in September 2023 between government and Sandstone Consortium to construct the road.
The project which is being undertaken under Public-Private Partnership (PPP) infrastructure initiative has cheered residents and other stakeholders in Mwinilunga district, North-Western Province.
In an interview with the media, the residents have described the project as a great milestone that will not only improve trade volumes between Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo(DRC) but also provide massive business and employment opportunities for local people and beyond.
Lloyd Kalamba, a resident in Chief Kakoma’s chiefdom, has applauded the government for the ongoing project adding it will help accelerate development and boost business in the district.
“We are grateful to the government for this road. In the past we were cut off from the rest of the country and we used to spend a lot of time on the road traveling for close to five hours from Lumwana in Kalumbila,” he said.
Another resident, Robert Katuta said once complete, the road will ease the transportation of goods and services.
“We thank the government for the good road. It has helped to facilitate transportation of goods for our businesses,” he said.
And North-Western United Party for National Development (UPND) Provincial Chairperson, Adam Sapezo said he is delighted that government’s Public-Private Partnership initiative is bearing fruit.
Mr Sapezo added that he is happy with the pace at which the contractor is working saying that once complete, the border road will position North-western Province to contribute to the Grow Zambia Agenda.
He said the project will not only provide business opportunities but will also create jobs for local people.
“The pace is so far impressive, this is what we wanted, this is why we are supporting the PPP concept. The road confirms that people of Kakoma, Mwinilunga and North-Western at large are ready for the Grow Zambia Agenda,” he said.
Mwinilunga East Member of Parliament, Jones Mukanzu described the project as a milestone that will benefit everyone across the province.
“Lumwana-Kambimba road is a milestone for us as people of Mwinilunga. This road will accelerate development, we believe it will play a key role in opening up a lot of businesses because of good road infrastructure,” he said.
Mr Mukanzu has further appealed to the business community to consider investing in Mwinilunga district.
