By Lusaka Times Editor July 31, 2026 FacebookTwitterPinterestWhatsAppZambian international Klings Kangwa has completed a move to Greek Super League giants Panathinaikos, signing a four-year contract that keeps him at the Athens club until June 2030.
The Kasama-born midfielder joins from Israeli side Hapoel Be’er Sheva in a deal reported to be worth a fixed €3.8 million, rising to €4.5 million with performance-related add-ons. Panathinaikos had first reached personal terms with Kangwa in May, but talks stalled before rivals AEK Athens entered the race with an offer reported at around €4 million. Panathinaikos revived their pursuit and completed the signing.
Kangwa, 27, arrives in Athens on the back of an outstanding campaign in Israel, where he was named Israeli Premier League Player of the Season after registering 12 goals and nine assists. He helped Hapoel Be’er Sheva win the 2025-26 Israeli league title, having already lifted the Israeli Cup in 2024-25 and the Israel Super Cup in 2025-26.
The midfielder was seen at the Panathinaikos Stadium during the club’s UEFA Conference League qualifier on Thursday before putting pen to paper on Friday. Before his move to Israel in 2024, Kangwa played for Serbian side Crvena Zvezda.
For Zambia, the switch marks another milestone for the national team, as one of the country’s most accomplished midfielders joins one of Greek football’s most decorated clubs, with the chance to compete regularly in European competition.
As we say in Chewa, “M’mene mtsinje umakulira, m’pamenenso nsomba zazikulu zimapezeka”: as a river grows, it begins to produce bigger fish. Growth opens doors to greater opportunities, and those who keep improving eventually find themselves on bigger stages.
