The learners say the programme is giving them practical agricultural skills that complement classroom learning and help them become self-reliant in future.
One of the learners, Maxwell Milatu, says the irrigation initiative is giving them hands-on experience.
Speaking when a team from the Ministry of Education toured the school to monitor the implementation of the initiative, Milatu said the programme is also helping them to put agriculture knowledge acquired in the classroom into practice.
“This initiative is giving us hands-on experience and will help us put agricultural knowledge acquired in the classroom into practice while giving us an appreciation of farming as a potential source of livelihood,” he said.
Another learner, Felity Katashi has thanked the government for introducing the initiative saying it will help the school become more self-sustaining.
Katashi said the programme will also enable the school to generate income from agricultural production which could help reduce its expenditure and support some of its operational needs.
“This initiative is welcome as it will provide us with practical agricultural skills that we can use to generate income and become self-reliant in the future,” he observed.
He added that the programme is also complementing the Competence-Based Curriculum by giving learners an opportunity to acquire practical skills beyond the classroom.
And Ministry of Education Assistant Director, Alvin Masendeke disclosed that the initiative is aimed at equipping learners with practical agricultural skills while contributing to national food production.
“As learners, you need to take advantage of this programme and acquire the skills being taught. The skills you learn here are the same skills you can use to help your parents at home and they can also help you become self-reliant and sustain yourselves in the future,” he said.
Mr Masendeke said the programme can also strengthen school feeding programmes by supporting food production within schools.
The Ministry’s inspection of the initiative is part of efforts to strengthen the implementation of the Presidential Irrigation Initiative and its contribution to practical skills development and agricultural production among learners.
