ZAMBIA has intensified its campaign for election to the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2027–2029 term.

The election is scheduled for Oct. 13 at UN Headquarters in New York.

In a video address to UN Member States at a reception held to lobby support for Zambia’s candidature, President Hakainde Hichilema reaffirmed Zambia’s longstanding commitment to advancing and safeguarding human rights at the global level.

President Hichilema said Zambia believes democracy, good governance, the rule of law and human rights form the bedrock of sustainable development and enduring peace.

Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Mulambo Haimbe, who is leading Zambia’s delegation to the General Assembly, said Zambia’s candidature is grounded on the conviction that the Human Rights Council remains indispensable to the universal promotion and protection of human rights.

Haimbe said Zambia sees membership as an opportunity for two-way impact – to bring the council closer to citizens, the region and developing countries, and to strengthen human rights at home while helping build a council that delivers more effectively everywhere.

He said Zambia attaches great importance to multilateralism, dialogue, democracy, the rule of law and international cooperation.

Permanent Secretary for International Relations and Cooperation Etambuyu Anamela Gundersen said Zambia attaches great importance to multilateralism, democracy and the rule of law, while Permanent Representative to the UN in New York Dr. Chola Milambo underscored that the UN’s three pillars of peacekeeping, development and human rights are core to what Zambia is.

Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva Eunice Luambia thanked stakeholders for the spirited engagement.
