President Hakainde Hichilema has challenged Mopani Copper Mines to unlock more copper from its mining tenements and ramp up production.

The Head of State says this is important as Zambia works towards its target of producing three million tonnes of copper annually by 2031.

President Hichilema says Mopani is a crucial asset in achieving the production target.

He was speaking during talks with International Resources Holding (IRH)-Mopani Copper Mines Chief Executive Officer Ali Al Rashi, as part of his two-day working visit to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

President Hichilema said he is encouraged by the progress being recorded at Mopani but wants the company to build on the gains and maximise the potential of the asset.

He noted that Mopani’s licence area is extensive and there is a need for increased exploration and the use of other techniques to identify and unlock additional mineral resources.

President Hichilema said Mopani must contribute to the Grow Zambia Agenda by increasing production, unlocking mineral resources and creating greater economic opportunities through the mining value chain.

He noted that Government has demonstrated consistency in its policy environment, laws and regulations governing the mining sector, providing certainty for investment.

And Mr. Al Rashi said his company remains committed to ensuring that Zambia meets its target of producing three million metric tonnes of copper annually.

Mr. Al Rashi said Mopani will continue exploring its mining tenements to increase copper production.

Meanwhile, ZCCM-IH Board Chairperson Phesto Musonda said Mopani has recorded its highest level of ore mining in the last three months.

Mr. Musonda said some mining areas that had remained closed for several years are now being brought back into operation, increasing Mopani’s production capacity.

He said ZCCM-IH is encouraged by the progress and will continue working with its partners to unlock the full potential of the asset.
