Government says it is creating opportunities for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and cooperatives to access markets, finance, skills and infrastructure in order to create sustainable jobs and wealth.

Speaking during the 98th Zambia Agriculture and Commercial Show in Lusaka, Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprise Development ,Assistant Director for Business Development and Grants, Chinyanta Chikula, said the Ministry is positioning MSMEs and cooperatives to take advantage of local, regional and international trade opportunities through innovation, value addition and improved market linkages.

Mr Chikula said about 25 MSMEs from various sectors are exhibiting at the show, highlighting innovation, entrepreneurship and value addition among Zambian businesses, including youth-led technologies.

He added that the Ministry has established industrial yards in eight districts to support production for export markets under AfCFTA, with the overall goal of strengthening MSMEs and cooperatives to create jobs, build wealth and improve access to markets and finance.

“We are committed to ensuring MSMEs thrive,” he said

Beneficiaries of the Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprise Development have commended the government for creating an enabling environment that is helping Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) grow through innovation, value addition and improved market access.

The beneficiaries said the Ministry has equipped them with critical business skills, including branding, packaging, marketing and product development, enabling them to increase the competitiveness of their businesses.

One of the beneficiaries, George Nyirenda, who has developed a technology that converts moisture from the atmosphere into safe drinking water, expressed confidence that with continued investment and support, locally developed innovations can compete on regional and international markets while providing practical solutions to national development challenges.

Meanwhile, Founder of Manyika Farm, Kabulo Hakayobe, has encouraged Zambians, particularly young people, to venture into commercial livestock farming, saying agriculture has become a profitable business capable of creating wealth and employment.

Mr Hakayobe, who is a teacher by profession at Choma Secondary School in Southern Province, said this year’s show theme of “Fostering Trade and Investment” highlights the growing importance of agriculture as a business venture rather than a traditional livelihood activity.

He also welcomed the government’s drive to increase beef exports, saying farmers should first focus on increasing livestock numbers, improving animal health and reducing mortality rates to meet both local and international demand.

“Farming is business, and it offers young people a real opportunity to create wealth while contributing to national development,” Mr Hakayobe said.
