Lusaka Province Permanent Secretary Joe Kalusa said the project implemented by Atkinson Construction Company Limited at a total cost of K5,824,199.92, was fully financed by the Government of the Republic of Zambia.
In a speech read on his behalf by Lusaka Province Acting Deputy Permanent Secretary Professor Gideon Mwanza during the commissioning ceremony, Mr Kalusa explained that the works involved the upgrade and mechanisation of 10 existing boreholes, five in Chilanga District and five in Kafue District.
Mr Kalusa also indicated that the investment reflects government’s commitment to strengthening water service delivery and improving living standards in communities.
“The government recognises that access to safe water is a fundamental human need and an essential driver of socio-economic development hence we will continue to invest in water infrastructure that improves the quality of life of our citizens, promotes public health, supports education and enhances agricultural productivity,” he stated.
Chilanga Acting District Commissioner Maureen Chilende said the commissioning of the water reticulation scheme in Linda Malupili community will benefit over 600 households with access to clean and safe water.
She noted that the project will reduce the risk of waterborne diseases and save women and girls time previously spent fetching water from streams.
“This investment demonstrates government’s commitment to improving access to clean and safe water for all citizens, especially in growing communities such as Linda Malupili, ”observed Ms Chilende.
“When communities have reliable water services, children are healthier, women and girls spend less time fetching water, and households are positioned to pursue productive activities that contribute to economic growth. A healthier community also contributes positively to the country’s development,” she added.
She also pointed out that access to clean water is not merely a convenience but a fundamental requirement for human health and sustainable development.
