The Copper Queens have arrived safely in Rabat, Morocco, ahead of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) which kicks off this Sunday.

According to FAZ Media, the Zambian squad landed at Rabat International Airport at 22h25 on Wednesday.

All players called for the assignment are in Morocco except Fridah Mukoma, who is expected to link up with the team.

Zambia travelled from Algeria to Morocco after concluding a training camp in Algiers. Coach Nora Häuptle’s side played two friendly matches against hosts Algeria in Algiers, drawing the first 1-1 before losing the second 1-0.

Zambia are in Group C alongside Nigeria, Egypt and Malawi.

The Copper Queens will kick off their campaign on Tuesday, July 28 against Egypt.

Captain Barbra Banda says the team is upbeat and hungry for success.

“Every player is bringing a different experience to the team. It will be exciting and I cannot wait for the WAFCON. This time we want to win the WAFCON and qualify for the World Cup,” Banda said.

Zambia won bronze at the 2022 WAFCON under the late coach Bruce Mwape.

Banda says the team wants to honour his legacy.

“We have to pull up our socks and win this WAFCON for everyone, especially for coach Bruce. We are trying to do something for him so that wherever he is, for sure he will be happy,” she added.

The top four teams at WAFCON will qualify for the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil next year.
