Police in Chinsali District in Muchinga Province have detained a 62-year-old motorist in connection with a fatal road traffic accident in which a 10-year-old pedestrian died on the spot.

The accident happened on August 31, 2026 around 16:30 hours at Chikwemba Village in Chinsali District along the Great North Road.

Muchinga Province Police Commanding Officer Lubinda Mayamba has confirmed the accident in a statement made available to Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) in Chinsali district today.

Mr Mayamba said the accident involved a Toyota RAV4 bearing In-transit (IT) number 1341, which was being driven from the northern direction towards the south by Samuel Ilunga ,62, of Chimwemwe Compound in Kitwe district in the Copperbelt Province.

He said the driver escaped unhurt, while the pedestrian, aged ,10-year-old of Chikwemba Village in Senior Chief Nkula’s Chiefdom, sustained severe head injuries and suspected fractures on the left ribs.

“The pedestrian sustained severe head injuries and suspected fractured left ribs and unfortunately died on the spot,” Mr Lubinda said.

He further said that preliminary investigations indicate that the accident happened when the motor vehicle was travelling from north to south and hit the pedestrian who was crossing the road from west to east.

Mr Lubinda said the deceased’s body was deposited at Chinsali General Hospital Mortuary awaiting postmortem examination.

“The driver has since been detained at Nambuluma Police Station for the offence of causing death by dangerous driving, while the motor vehicle has been impounded depending on investigations and court appearance,” he said.
