United Party for National Development (UPND)  candidate, Chinga Miyutu has been elected as Member of Parliament for the newly created Kalabo South Constituency.

Kalabo South Constituency Returning Officer, Moses Kasanda declared Mr Miyutu as duly elected Member of Parliament after obtaining 5,590 out of 9,784 of the valid votes cast.

With 57.13 percent of the valid votes cast, Mr Miyutu has beaten his closest challenger, Mooto Kalowa, who polled 4,147 votes as an Independent candidate.

Meanwhile, Mwangala Kangongwe contesting on the Citizens’ First (CF) ticket polled 47 ballots in third place.

“I have, in accordance with the law, ascertained the results of the poll in the said constituency. I therefore declare that the said Chinga Miyutu to be this day duly elected as Member of Parliament for Kalabo South Constituency,” Mr Kasanda said.

He further declared that a total of 131 ballots were rejected as invalid.

Kalabo South Constituency has 39 polling stations and a total number of 13,848 registered voters comprising 5,446 males and 8,402 females.

Out of the total number of registered voters, a total of 9,915 votes were cast representing 71.6 percent voter turnout.
