Two men have died in a road traffic accident involving a Toyota Wish and a cyclist in the Muyumbana area along the Mongu-Kalabo Road.

Western Province Police Commissioner Godfrey Mwanza confirmed the incident in a statement to  media , saying it occurred  around 19:30 hours.

Mr Mwanza said the accident involved a 36-year-old driver, Mike Mwangu of Litambya, Senanga, who was driving an unregistered Toyota Wish, and an unidentified cyclist riding an unmarked Buffalo bicycle.

He said both the vehicle and bicycle were travelling in the same direction, from south to north, when the driver lost control of the vehicle due to excessive speed, hit the cyclist and subsequently collided with a tree.

Mr Mwanza said both the driver and cyclist sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene.

He said the Toyota Wish and bicycle were extensively damaged, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at Kalabo District Hospital mortuary pending post-mortem examinations.

The Police Commissioner has since urged motorists and other road users to observe road safety measures at all times.

He advised motorists to maintain controllable speeds, particularly at night when visibility is reduced, noting that excessive speed affects reaction time and vehicle control.

Mr Mwanza also urged cyclists to use reflectors, reflective jackets and functional lights when riding at night to improve their visibility to other road users.
