The Ministry of Green Economy and Environment has called for stronger partnerships between Government, the private sector and communities in restoring Zambia’s degraded landscapes.

Ministry Permanent Secretary Douty Chibamba said environmental restoration is critical to strengthening the country’s resilience to climate change and safeguarding natural resources for future generations.

Dr Chibamba said this in a speech read on his behalf by Ministry of Green Economy and Environment Director of Forestry Freddie Siangulube during a tree-planting exercise sponsored by Airtel Zambia at Kaunda Square Secondary School in Lusaka.

“Tree planting is one of the simplest but most effective ways of restoring ecosystems, protecting water resources, preventing soil erosion and improving environmental resilience,” Dr Chibamba said.

Dr Chibamba commended Airtel Zambia for its nationwide tree-planting initiative, which targets to plant more than 500 trees.

He said  the programme demonstrates the important role of the private sector in environmental sustainability.

Dr Chibamba noted that climate variability and extreme weather events, including droughts, continue to affect agriculture, forestry, water and energy, negatively impacting livelihoods.

Dr Chibamba said the initiative is also in line with the Government’s Grow Zambia agenda, which seeks to promote sustainable economic growth while safeguarding natural resources.

He disclosed that the Ministry, through the Department of Forestry, is preparing to launch the National Tree Planting Strategy to guide restoration programmes across the country.

Meanwhile, Airtel Zambia Managing Director Hussam Baday has called for collective action among Government, the private sector, schools and communities in addressing climate change.

Mr Baday said businesses, schools, communities, civil society organisations and individuals all have a role to play in protecting the environment.

“The fight against climate change cannot be left to Government alone; it requires concerted efforts from all stakeholders,” Mr Baday said.

Mr Baday said the tree-planting initiative demonstrates Airtel’s commitment to environmental sustainability and responsible corporate citizenship.

He said the trees will provide shade and cleaner air for future generations while encouraging learners to contribute to environmental protection.

And Kaunda Square Secondary School Head Teacher Pastor Michael Chanda has pledged to ensure that the trees planted at the school are properly protected and maintained.

Mr Chanda said a green environment contributes to quality education by creating a soothing and welcoming atmosphere for learners.

“We pledge to take care of these trees so that they grow and contribute to a green and healthy learning environment,” he said.
