Russia Plans $202.6 Billion Defence Budget for 2027

Russia is planning to allocate 17.1 trillion roubles ($202.6 billion) for defence in 2027, according to government budget documents reviewed by Reuters.

The planned figure is around 27% higher than the 13.5 trillion roubles previously budgeted for 2027. If approved, it would represent Russia’s highest annual defence allocation since the start of its full-scale war against Ukraine in 2022.

The draft plans also project around 50 trillion roubles ($591.7 billion) in defence spending over the next three years.

The increase comes alongside growing pressure on Russia’s finances. The government has raised its estimate for the 2026 budget deficit to 3.2% of GDP, while state debt is projected to reach 21.7% of GDP in 2027.

Russia is expected to submit the draft budget to parliament by October 1.
