People advocate for a 3rd term when power has gotten to their heads — Antonio

DEMOCRATIC Progressive Party —DPP president Antonio Mwanza says people only begin to see the removal of presidential term limits as a good idea when they are in power.

And Mwanza says President Hakainde Hichilema can end the debate over the removal of term limits by clearly reaffirming his position against a third term.

Speaking when he featured on Radio Christian Voice, Mwanza said people begin to advocate for the removal of term limits when power has gotten to their heads.

Mwanza says people often forget that power is temporary and that no leader, regardless of their popularity or sophistication, can remain in power forever.

“When you see people advocate for the removal of term limits, know that power has gotten to their heads.

“But they forget one thing, that the principle of life is that power is temporal. It doesn’t matter who you are. It doesn’t matter how popular you are. It doesn’t matter how sophisticated you are as a leader. Power is temporal. You cannot be in power for the rest of your life,” he said.

He says politicians also tend to view laws differently depending on whether they are in power or in opposition.

“And these laws that we put in order to just safeguard our interests, we forget that law is a double-edged sword. Today when you’re in power, Public Order Act is a good law. Today when you’re in power, a third term is a good law,” Mwanza said.

Mwanza also accused some people around political leaders of competing to demonstrate their loyalty to those in power.

“You know what bootlickers do? They lick the President’s ears.

“You see what poverty does is that everybody wants to show that he is so loyal to the President. That’s what everyone does. Everyone wants to prove that he is so loyal to the President, that he loves the President more than the other one, so they are competing over who loves the President more,” he said.

And Mwanza says President Hichilema can bring the debate among his supporters to an end by reaffirming his position on presidential term limits.

“There is something that the President can do to end this debate from his supporters. It’s just to reaffirm his position: that he doesn’t believe in the removal of presidential term limits and, two, that he doesn’t believe in the third term,” he said.
