The National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) candidate, Sara Kasama, has retained the Chikanda Ward Councilor seat in Mfuwe Constituency after polling 2,039 votes out of the 3,510 votes cast.

Her closest rival, Florence Chanda of the United Party for National Development (UPND), polled 457 votes.

Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) Mfuwe Constituency Returning Officer, Gilbert Mwango, declared Ms. Kasama the winner after the verification of results from all 10 polling stations in Chikanda Ward at the Mfuwe Constituency Totaling Centre in Lavushimanda District.

Mr Mwango said 3,510 votes were cast, while 1,035 ballot papers were rejected as invalid.

“I therefore declare that the said Kasama Sara is this day duly elected as Member of the Lavushimanda District Council for Chikanda Ward,” he said.

The declaration was witnessed by stakeholders from various organisations involved in the electoral process.

Meanwhile, Ms Kasama thanked the people of Chikanda Ward for retaining her as their Councilor.

She said she plans to achieve more for the ward and provide greater representation than during her previous term.

“I am so excited to see that people love me, and I feel like crying because the votes that I got are a lot,” she said.

Ms Kasama remains the only woman among the elected ward councilors in Lavushimanda District.
