Netherlands to Close Harare Embassy as Sweden Also Winds Down Mission
HARARE — The Netherlands is set to close its embassy in Harare as part of a major restructuring of its worldwide diplomatic network, adding to changes in the diplomatic presence of European countries in Zimbabwe.
The Dutch government announced the planned closure on Tuesday, saying its interests in Zimbabwe would in future be promoted through embassies in neighbouring countries.
The move forms part of a broader restructuring of the Netherlands’ diplomatic network, which will also see missions closed in several other countries.
The Embassy of the Netherlands in Harare acknowledged the significance of the decision for its partners and friends in Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi.
“We recognise that this is significant news for our partners and friends in Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi, given the many strong relationships we have built over the years,” the embassy said.
The mission stressed that the closure was part of a broader restructuring and did not change its appreciation of its relationships in the region.
“The decision is part of a broader restructuring of the Netherlands’ diplomatic network and does not change our appreciation for the close ties or our commitment to working with the respective governments and other partners and across the region,” it said.
The embassy said it would focus on ensuring a smooth transition while maintaining cooperation with its networks in the region.
“We are focused on ensuring a careful transition towards closure and continued cooperation with our networks in the period ahead,” the embassy said.
The Netherlands’ announcement comes as Sweden is also winding down its embassy in Harare.
Sweden announced earlier this year that its bilateral development cooperation with Zimbabwe would be phased out and that its embassy in Harare would close by the end of October 2026.
Sweden said the decision was driven by changes to its development cooperation and funding priorities and was not linked to specific policies or events in Zimbabwe.
The Swedish Embassy is already no longer open to the public as it winds down its operations.
The Netherlands and Sweden have both emphasised that the closure of their missions does not mean an end to relations with Zimbabwe.
For the Netherlands, diplomatic interests in countries where missions are being closed will continue to be pursued through neighbouring missions, while Sweden has said it intends to maintain its relationship with Zimbabwe beyond development cooperation, including through trade and business ties.
The developments mark a significant change in the European diplomatic footprint in Harare, with two long-standing missions now being wound down within the same year.
