117 ViewsThe National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) presidential candidate Brian Mundubile has lamented what he describes as an unequal playing field ahead of the August 13 General Elections, alleging harassment and seizure of personal property by authorities.
Speaking at a press briefing this morning, Mundubile said members of his campaign team have been subjected to intimidation and harassment making it difficult for the opposition to campaign freely.
“My hands, legs are tied, passport and phones grabbed. How can the play field be equal?” Mundubile said.
Responding to a question with regards to the electoral playing field Mundubile said an election is not an event but a process in which the prevailing environment for the period have a bearing on the result.
He said his passport and phones were grabbed four months ago, rendering him unable to campaign to the fullest.
The former Leader of Opposition in Parliament said the actions were aimed at crippling his ability to mobilize and communicate during the campaign period.
“When your passport is taken, when your phones are taken, when your movement is restricted, then you ask yourself: are we going into an election where everyone has equal opportunity?” he asked.
Mundubile said despite the challenges, the Tonse Alliance would continue engaging voters and presenting its policies to Zambians.
“We will not be deterred. But Zambians must know that democracy thrives when there is fairness, respect for the law, and respect for the rights of all players,” he added.
The Tonse Alliance candidate called on the Electoral Commission of Zambia, ECZ, the Zambia Police Service, and other stakeholders to ensure that all political players are allowed to campaign without fear.
He also appealed to international observers and civil society to monitor the environment ahead of polling day.
“We are 27 days to elections. The Zambian people deserve to choose their leaders in an atmosphere that is free, fair and peaceful,” Mundubile said.
