Zambia : UPND Petitions Parley Seats In Muchinga

The United Party for National Development (UPND) has petitioned for two parliamentary seats in the Chinsali High Court in Muchinga Province.

The seats are the Chinsali Central seat in Chinsali District where UPND candidate, Christopher Chiponde has petitioned the election of Chanda Mwansa of the National Restoration Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP).

The other is the Shiwangandu seat in Shiwangandu district where a UPND supporter and voter, Victor Beleshi has petitioned the election of Stephen Kampyongo of the NRPUP.

According to records obtained by the media at the Chinsali High Court, Mr Chiponde is seeking the court to nullify the results of the parliamentary election.

Mr Chiponde said the election was marred with shockingly widespread illegalities and violence against persons and property.

He cited other grounds to warrant the nullification of the results as alleged intimidation, corruption, procedural breaches and other misconduct during the election that declared Mr Mwansa.

The petitioner further alleged that there was widespread non- compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Process Act no. 35 of 2016 stating that this affected the outcome of the elections.

Mr Chiponde has further cited Mr Mwansa who was declared winner as the first respondent, while the Electoral Commission of Zambia as the second respondent.

And in Shiwang’andu Constituency, Victor Beleshi a voter who is also a member of the United Party for National Development (UPND) has petitioned for the parliamentary seat.

The Petitioner is seeking recourse against the respondent Stephen Kampyongo Member of Parliament elect in Shiwangandu Constituency and wants the results be declared null and void.

Mr Beleshi stated that NRPUP members at various polling stations were allowed to vote for more than two people and spent long periods of time inside the polling stations.

The other grounds have been cited are that at some polling stations, the respondent and his agents were giving money to the electorates and evidence abounds in this area.

The NRPUP scooped both the Chinsali Central seat and the Shiwangandu parliamentary seat during the August 13th general election.

NRPUP candidate Chanda Mwansa obtained 11254 votes against Christopher Chiponde of the UPND who got 4430 votes.

In the Shiwangandu, Stephen Kampyongo got 11,536 votes against Robert Kapeya of the UPND who got 9941 votes.

Both seats were petitioned on Friday, August 28th, 2026.
