Zambia : Serenje Chief Calls For Illegal Mining End

Senior Chief Muchinda of the Lala people of Serenje district has called on the government to curb illegal mining in the area, which he says endangers the lives of the youths in his chiefdom.

Chief Muchinda notes that illegal mining activities pose a threat, saying those engaged, continue to conduct mining activities without taking safety precautions.

The traditional leader made these remarks when Serenje District Commissioner Ellen Miselo, who is on a familiarisation tour of the district, paid a courtesy call on him.

He explained that illegal mining activities have become prevalent in his area, with young people being employed without proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), thereby endangering their lives.

“We need to work together to fight illegal mining to safeguard the lives of our children. We need to deal with criminals, illegal miners and those selling land illegally, in order to preserve our land,” he said.

And Senior Chief Muchinda said most mining companies operating in his area are doing so illegally, stating that they are not undertaking Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes in the chiefdom.

He urged the government to regulate the working conditions of mine workers and ensure that they are provided with the necessary protective and working equipment.

Meanwhile, Serenje District Commissioner Ellen Mibenge commended the traditional leader for preserving trees in his chiefdom and assured him of the government’s support in fostering development in the district.

She said her office will ensure that investors comply with the law so that local people will benefit from their investments.
