GOVERNMENT has described the ongoing staff audit in local authorities as critical to improving service delivery.

Northern Province Assistant Director Planning, Christopher Bwalya, says the audit is important in addressing staffing challenges affecting local authorities.

Mr Bwalya states that the province appreciates the efforts being made by the Local Government Service Commission to strengthen the operations of local authorities.

Speaking on behalf Northern Province Acting Permanent Secretary Beauty Undi-Phiri, when he received a delegation of commissioners from the Local Government Service Commission, Mr Bwalya noted that he is hopeful the districts selected for the exercise would provide a clear picture of the progress being made in addressing issues identified by the Commission.

“We have observed how local authorities have responded to issues that arise from staff auditing and that you have been able to come through and respond, we hope that this will help address the issues,” he said.

And Local Government Service Commissioner Justina Phiri disclosed that while in the province the commission will conduct a staff audit in various local authorities.

“Our visit is about staff auditing and other issues. We need to see the staff establishment and concerns over employment where some officers are occupying offices for which they do not have the required qualifications,” she said.
