The 23-kilometre Kabwe Bypass has been opened to traffic, allowing motorists travelling through Kabwe to bypass the town centre as works continue on the Lusaka-Kabwe road project.

Ministry of Information and Media Director Spokesperson Henry Kapata says the opening of the bypass has allowed the contractor to intensify works on the less-than-one-kilometre dual carriageway in Kabwe town centre.

Mr Kapata says one side of the carriageway is now carrying traffic, while drainage works continue to improve stormwater management and address flooding in the town.

He said the old pavement on the other side has been completely removed, paving the way for reconstruction of the remaining two lanes now that through traffic is using the bypass.

Mr Kapata says works are also continuing on completed sections of the road, including the installation of road markings, as construction progresses towards the target of completing the entire Lusaka-Kabwe stretch by the end of 2026.

The three-year project, which commenced in May 2024, is progressing ahead of schedule, with the bypass providing space for major works in Kabwe town centre while allowing through traffic to continue moving.
