With only 2 months remaining before the 2026 general elections, why haven’t several opposition presidential candidates held a single major political rally even when the time is ticking toward the 12th of August which is the voting day?

Despite the electoral calendar moving into a critical campaign period, most opposition parties remain uninterested from holding large public mobilisations, while the ruling party continues with structured political activities across the country.

However, speaking in an interview with Zambian Business Times – ZBT, Tonse Alliance Presidential Affairs Chairperson, former Nkana member of parliament and Movement for Good Governance leader, Binwell Mpundu said uncertainty around electoral announcements has contributed to opposition hesitation.

“It has been very unclear as to whether political parties can engage in distinct political activities, particularly rallies, when there have been underhand infractions by the Electoral Commission of Zambia,” said Mpundu.

However, he confirmed that the Tonse Alliance will begin campaign rallies, but admitted that opposition parties have been operating cautiously due to fear of enforcement actions.

Mpundu added that past incidents involving the stopping of opposition gatherings, including the Mazabuka episode, have created fear among political players about possible arrests or disruptions during campaigns.
