Government in partnership with Ignite Access, have launched a three-year Connectivity and Digital Learning programme, set to benefit 70 schools in the country.

Under the Initiative dubbed “Lynx Zambia Digital Inclusion”, the beneficiary schools will be linked to Starlink satellite internet connectivity, while those off the national electricity grid will be connected to solar power.

Speaking during the launch at Chainda Primary school in Chongwe district, Head of the Presidential Delivery Unit, Kusobile Kamwambi described the programme as a milestone in advancing Zambia’s energy and digital inclusion agenda.

In speech read for her by PDU Delivery Manager for Enhanced Value Chains, Jones Shimbela, Ms Kamwambi noted that the initiative is aimed at directly addressing two national priorities, which are expanding access to reliable electricity and accelerating digital inclusion.

She explained that the government targets to increase electricity access to 66 percent by 2031, while ensuring that 80 percent of the population has access to internet connectivity, with at least 20 percent fully participating in the digital economy by 2031.

Ms Kamwambi stated that these goals form part of the broader Grow Zambia Agenda, which seeks to move the country from stabilisation, to stronger economic growth, increased production, wealth creation and greater citizen participation.

She emphasised that the Lynx Zambia Digital Inclusion programme is therefore not simply about connecting 70 schools to the internet, but about creating opportunities that contribute to Zambia’s future growth.

“That means connectivity can help a small business communicate with customers, allow a farmer or trader to access market information, support young people to explore online work and business opportunities, and enable community members to use services such as mobile money and other digital financial platforms: practical opportunities that can bring more citizens into the digital economy and support the Grow Zambia Agenda”, Ms Kamwambi stressed.

Speaking at the same event, Ministry of Education Permanent Secretary for Administration, Noriana Muneku who was represented by the Ministry’s Director for ICT, Victor Musangu said the support will directly enable the uptake of digital services and improved financial accountability in education institutions.

She explained that the Ministry of Education has been tasked to ensure schools begin using the government-provided financial management solution, noting that without connectivity, directives remain ineffective.

She stressed that with innovation and partner support, the Electronic Government Division, will ensure secure connectivity of terminals to the government-wide area network, thereby realising accountability in schools.

Ms Muneku disclosed that the ministry has already installed equipment in 75 classrooms to transform them into smart classrooms, opening opportunities for teachers to use artificial intelligence for continuous learning.

She emphasised that infrastructure without reliable power and connectivity remains incomplete, underscoring the importance of partner support in achieving the government’s vision.

“This effort is critical. It ensures that accountability systems function, classrooms become truly smart, and the education sector benefits from innovation that supports Zambia’s connectivity, trade, tourism and economic development”, she said.

And Ignite Access Managing Director, Hellen Zulu disclosed that during the first year, the company will provide installation, connectivity, solar systems and data services at no cost to schools.

She added that beyond that, the programme will adopt a sustainable model where schools continue to benefit from free educational access, while surrounding communities gain affordable internet services, at a fee.

“A connected school is no longer a luxury. It is an essential platform for delivering quality education”, Ms Zulu said.

Meanwhile, beneficiaries at Chainda School, in Chongwe have expressed gratitude for the support.

School Head teacher, Stella Lipalile disclosed that over 2600 learners at the school would benefit from the programme, adding that it will also enhance research for staff, while Head girl, Grace Matibenga indicated that the support will improve ICT learning.
