GIVEN LUBINDA DEMANDS ANSWERS ON COURT CLOSURE, TREASON ARRESTS AND KAFWAYA’S DEATH

Opposition Patriotic Front PF member Given Lubinda has called for greater transparency, due process and respect for the rule of law following Zambia’s 13 August 2026 elections, saying the country must emerge from the electoral period more united and confident in its institutions.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Wednesday, Mr Lubinda urged Government to explain the circumstances surrounding the reported closure of the courts on 24 August, particularly because it occurred during the constitutional window for challenging the presidential election.

He said national security concerns must be addressed seriously, but should not become a blanket justification for limiting constitutional rights, calling for a clear public account of the security threat and safeguards put in place to preserve access to justice.

Lubinda also called for due process in cases involving treason and other national-security allegations, saying accusations must be tested through evidence and courts rather than political declarations.

He has also demanded an independent and lawful inquiry into the death of former Minister Mutotwe Kafwaya, raised concerns over the detention of Archbishop Alick Banda while meeting bail conditions, and appealed to President Hakainde Hichilema to use his renewed mandate to promote reconciliation, accountability and constitutional governance.

Mr Lubinda sa Zambia needs neither political triumphalism nor division, but institutions that protect both national security and citizens’ rights.

“ZAMBIA BELONGS TO ALL OF US,” he declared.
