The Ministry of Health says menopause should no longer be treated as a private matter that women have to endure in silence.
The Ministry’s Assistant Director for Reproductive Health, Angel Mwiche, says in order to bridge the gap, the ministry will integrate the Midlife and Menopause Society of Zambia (MIMESOZA)’s women’s health strategic plan for 2026-2028 into the public health strategy and primary healthcare system.
Dr Mwiche noted that the ministry will also strengthen the capacity of healthcare workers to manage menopause, which can cause hot flashes, poor sleep, mood changes, anxiety and joint pains, among other challenges.
He further disclosed that the ministry will also support the development of national guidelines for the Society Women’s Health, through the incorporating of menopause management into health worker training curriculum and promote public awareness messages in all local languages.
He reiterated that menopause should be openly discussed in homes, workplaces and churches, as supporting women during this transition benefits families, workplaces and communities.
Dr Mwiche was speaking in a speech read on his behalf by Women and Newborn Hospital Senior Medical Superintendent Mukatimui Munalula during the presentation of the Midlife and Menopause Society of Zambia 2026-2028 strategic plan in Lusaka,
Meanwhile MIMESOZA’s Secretary Cheswa Vwalika who is also Venus Center Medical Officer, said that it is high time the menopause issue affecting women in the country got the attention it deserves.
