Japan Tobacco International (JTI) has handed over a newly constructed female ward Kabamba Rural Health Centre in Serenje district to the government.

The new ward is also equipped with a water reticulation system, two showers, a consultation room, a pharmacy, two toilets, two storerooms and a nursing bay.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, JTI Operations Services Director Eileen Kaunda, said the company identified the need for improved infrastructure at the health facility through engagement with the local community and an assessment of the local context.

“The project forms part of JTI’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme aimed at improving access to healthcare services and providing a safe health environment for members of the community,” Ms Kaunda said.

And Tobacco Board of Zambia (TBZ) Chief Operations Officer, Tyndale Kasongole, said providing healthcare services closer to communities has the potential to make a meaningful difference in the lives of many families in the area.

Meanwhile, Serenje District Commissioner, Ellen Mibenge, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to achieving universal health coverage by ensuring that all Zambians, regardless of their location, have access to quality healthcare services.

“This facility brings quality healthcare closer to our people and demonstrates our commitment to leaving no one behind, regardless of their location,” she said.

And a community member, Mwape Chibuye, said the new ward would help reduce the costs which residents used to incur when travelling to distant health facilities to seek medical attention.

Another resident, Gift Chalwe, said the facility will ease the burden of residents by improving access to healthcare services within the community.
