CIA DIRECTOR REPORTEDLY WARNED MOSCOW OF SOVIET-STYLE ECONOMIC COLLAPSE

CIA Director John Ratcliffe reportedly delivered a stark warning during his secretive visit to Moscow in late August: Russia’s battlefield campaign is stalling, its economic burden is becoming unsustainable and continuing the war could eventually produce a collapse resembling that of the Soviet Union.

“The economy will collapse—just as it did in the Soviet Union at the end of the Cold War,” a senior diplomat familiar with the American assessment told Germany’s Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

Ratcliffe met senior Russian intelligence officials, including FSB Director Alexander Bortnikov. Earlier reporting from The New York Times and The Washington Post said he presented a bleak assessment of Russia’s military and economic position and urged Moscow to negotiate before both deteriorated further.

Some reports claim Vladimir Putin canceled a planned meeting after learning what Ratcliffe intended to say. That detail has not been independently confirmed. The Kremlin acknowledged that Ratcliffe visited Moscow and did not meet Putin, but said the Russian leader was briefed afterward.

The reported American message was not that Russia will collapse tomorrow. Moscow can continue financing the war in the near term, but only by accepting mounting deficits, distorted investment, declining civilian growth and an increasingly militarized economy.

Washington’s broader conclusion appears clear: Ukraine is not about to surrender, Russia’s enormous losses have failed to produce a decisive breakthrough and time may not favor the Kremlin as much as Putin assumes.

The war may be approaching another battlefield stalemate—but economically, Russia cannot sustain an imperial war indefinitely without eventually forcing its own population to pay the price.
