Former presidential candidate Brian Muntayalwa Mundubile has called on the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to provide an immediate explanation on the handling and custody of GEN 20 forms used in the presidential electoral process.
Mundubile said the integrity of the presidential election was at stake following information alleging that GEN 20 forms had been collected from various districts and may have been subjected to interference or alteration.
He has challenged the ECZ to explain who authorised the collection and movement of the election documents and under which provisions of the law the forms were moved.
Mundubile said the original GEN 20 forms must be preserved because they are critical to transparency, verification and any lawful challenge arising from discrepancies in presidential election results.
He has also demanded clarification on the suspension of the announcement of results, including what happened during the period, which officials had access to election materials and whether any GEN 20 forms were moved.
The former presidential candidate further raised allegations that intelligence or military officers may have been involved in collecting GEN 20 forms from town clerks.
Mundubile has called on the ECZ to state clearly whether any military or intelligence personnel collected or had access to the election documents.
He also cited allegations involving election officials in Southern Province, who were allegedly pressured to modify figures, as well as similar claims involving officials in North-Western Province, who were allegedly directed to alter figures appearing on GEN 20 forms.
Mundubile stressed that the claims remain allegations and should be subjected to urgent and independent investigations.
He said all original GEN 20 forms and other election documents capable of establishing a clear audit trail must be preserved to protect the integrity of the electoral record.
Mundubile has consequently called on the ECZ, law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders to take immediate measures to safeguard election materials and ensure that no documents are tampered with, altered, removed or destroyed.
“The people of Zambia deserve nothing less than a transparent, verifiable and credible presidential electoral process,” Mundubile said.
The call comes amid continued scrutiny of the management and verification of presidential election results, with GEN 20 forms serving as key documents in the electoral results process.
