The Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) has announced that it will not broadcast Zambia’s away matches in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign, meaning fans in the country will not be able to watch Friday evening’s Algeria versus Zambia encounter on ZNBC.

In a statement issued on Friday, by Yvette Tembo Chanda-Head of Corporate Affairs, September 25, 2026, ZNBC said the decision is because the national broadcaster has not acquired the broadcast rights for Zambia’s away fixtures in the qualifiers.

The Chipolopolo are scheduled to face Algeria at the Hocine Aït Ahmed Stadium in Tizi Ouzou on Friday in their opening Group I match of the 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign. ZNBC had previously reported that the match would kick off at 21:00 Zambian time.

The announcement means football supporters hoping to follow the Chipolopolo’s first qualifying match on ZNBC will have to look for other authorised broadcast options.

CAF has confirmed that the 2027 AFCON qualifiers are being broadcast through a combination of international and African broadcasters, with beIN Sports holding rights in several territories.

However, ZNBC has confirmed that it will broadcast Zambia’s home matches during the qualifying campaign.

The first of those fixtures will be Zambia’s encounter against Togo at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola on Tuesday, September 29, 2026.

ZNBC says it will also broadcast Zambia’s other home qualifying fixtures, including the match against Burundi in November 2026 and the home encounter against Algeria in March 2027.

The broadcaster is now calling on corporate entities and business partners to come on board and sponsor its coverage of the home matches.

According to ZNBC, sponsorship opportunities are available through its Sales and Marketing teams, with the broadcaster seeking partnerships to help deliver what it described as seamless and high-quality coverage of the Chipolopolo’s home fixtures.

Zambia are in Group I alongside Algeria, Togo and Burundi in the road to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which will be hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

The Chipolopolo’s campaign begins with the difficult away assignment against Algeria before they return home to face Togo four days later.

ZNBC’s decision not to show the Algeria match also highlights the importance of broadcast rights in modern football, as television coverage of international matches depends on broadcasters securing the necessary rights from the relevant rights holders.

For Zambian supporters, attention will now turn to the available authorised viewing options for the Algeria clash, while the September 29 home fixture against Togo is set to mark the beginning of ZNBC’s live coverage of Zambia’s home AFCON qualifying matches.
