For many workers, payday brings a feeling of relief. Bills can finally be paid, groceries can be bought and some of the financial pressure accumulated during the previous weeks temporarily disappears.

But for some people, that relief does not last very long.

Within days, rent or household contributions are paid, debts are settled, food is purchased, transport is paid for and a few unexpected expenses appear. Before long, the balance in the account looks surprisingly small.

One of the biggest reasons this happens is that people often budget around what they have available, rather than what they actually need to spend during the entire month.

A simple way to change that is to divide your salary into categories before spending it.

Essential expenses should come first. These can include rent, food, transport, electricity, water, school-related costs, debt repayments and other unavoidable obligations.

After that, money can be allocated towards savings and emergencies.

Only then should discretionary spending be considered.

The temptation on payday is to reward yourself immediately because you have been waiting for your salary. There is nothing inherently wrong with enjoying your money, but spending heavily during the first few days can create problems later.

Small expenses can also become surprisingly expensive when repeated.

Buying a K30 snack every working day, for example, can amount to roughly K600 over 20 working days. Several similar habits can quietly consume hundreds of kwacha without feeling like a major purchase.

Another useful habit is to avoid treating savings as whatever remains at the end of the month.

If possible, decide how much you want to save before spending begins.

That way, saving becomes part of the monthly plan rather than something that happens only when there is leftover money.

The same principle applies to emergency funds.

An unexpected medical bill, vehicle problem, family emergency or urgent trip can quickly destroy a carefully planned budget if there is no reserve.

Current cost-of-living discussions in Zambia continue to highlight the pressure households face, making planning particularly important.

The goal is not to avoid enjoying your salary.

It is to make sure that the version of you receiving the salary on payday does not spend everything and leave the version of you at the end of the month struggling.
