FOREIGN Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Mulambo Haimbe on dismissed claims that Zambians in the diaspora protested at U.N. headquarters in New York, saying the delegation was warmly received.

Haimbe is representing President Hakainde Hichilema at the 81st U.N. General Assembly.

“There is no such thing as protests against Zambia. Let us not listen to the allegations on social media,” Haimbe said on the sidelines of the opening of the general debate.

He said Zambians living in the United States told him they were satisfied with the August general elections and optimistic about continued development under Hichilema’s second term.

Haimbe urged Zambians to uphold peace, unity and national cohesion.

“Those who voted for and those who voted against — we are now past the election, let us move forward,” he said.

The general debate opened with U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warning that global divisions have deepened, and General Assembly President Khalilur Rahman saying trust is earned, not given. Speakers included Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, U.S. President Donald Trump, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and French President Emmanuel Macron.

Haimbe is scheduled to deliver Zambia’s national statement Monday, Sept. 28.

On the margins, Zambia signed a joint communique establishing diplomatic relations with Andorra. Haimbe and Andorran Foreign Minister Imma Tor Faus signed for their governments, opening cooperation in tourism, digital governance, financial services, education and climate action.

Zambia also co-hosted a high-level event marking two years since the Pact for the Future, with Namibia, the U.N. Economic Commission for Africa, the African Union and U.N. offices. Zambia said implementation of the pact is a collective responsibility.

Health Minister Roma Chilengi attended the launch of the Accra Reset High-Level Panel report on reform of global health governance, which calls for international cooperation to strengthen national priorities and capabilities — an approach Zambia supports.
